    hi all,

i am fairly new to css. i know the very basics, can work with scripts and adapt them. i learned webdesign in the late 90ies and have troubles forget about my beloved tables ;-)

anyway, i designed a homepage which i completely want to code in CSS and without frames.
since i am such a beginner with CSS layouts, i'd like to know how i would divide my page in divs.

i understand that i would create a container with a fixed size, and have that centered horizontal as vertical. all the other items, big question mark.

    any help?

here's the screenshot of my design:

what?? i don't see why crossposting is impolite. how can i know who is in what forum, and i know from the past that in some forums you don't get any helpful answers at all, and in some you get a lot of answers. i didn't know which forum is well-known, long established or whatever so i just googled and posted in the three boards that came up. since i am kind of in a rush i didn't want to risk to wait to long before getting answers!

i am not trying to get a step by step instruction or even the code posted! i just want different answers from different people because everyone explains things in a different way.

    thank you very much–

Did you not read the whole of the linked post? Or, did you see the first few words, and rush back here to exhibit a total lack of gorm?

For starters, it is common netiquette to become acquainted with a message board (mb) or mail list (ml) before ever posting. That means subscribing, and lurking as you come to know the ml or mb's strengths and weaknesses. It means you read and understand all the rules and protocols of a given ml or mb in addition to the normal protocols ( see http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html ).

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency for others. Which did you do to cause the rush? Procrastinate until the job was running late, or bite off more than you could chew? Neither is reason to have disparate groups working on the same issue for you. You are wasting someone's time, and that is disrespectful to those who are trying to help you.

That's fine. You go to one board or list, you get a few answers, you ask for clarifications where needed. If you're then unsatisfied, you go to your second choice and ask again, explaining why you're asking for more, and linking to the first thread so no one will waste their time repeating what others have already posted.

Learn and use good netiquette and you will be seen as having a modicum of clue, and therefore worth helping.

    cheers,

    gary

I guess if you had a particular CSS problem in mind, it would be easier, but explaining all the workings of CSS is a little more than can be explained in one forum post. I would suggest getting a book. "Eric Meyer on Css" is a good one that I can think of right of the top of my head, but there are many.
    Some good links are
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/
    http://www.alistapart.com/
    and
    http://www.stylegala.com/
there are at least a dozen more that I'm not thinking about right now. Just do a search.
