I agree - I haven't seen any ill effects from mass submitting to 100-150 directories at a time. Only a small percentage of them will approve your link within the first 24 hours. The rest of them will get approved at different times, so you don't get all your links in one day.

Also, I'm still not sure about the link building penalty. Article submission gives me far more backlinks all at once and I hardly ever hear about G penalizing for that.

Dude its the client who wants faster service.
We also have daily slow submissions packages.
currently i have 6 cleints who pay me for a monthly package and i submit to 9 directories daily which is a custom package.
Also you can check out the directories list here - Value Directories

I get traffic from a very few directories. Its very difficult. The best thing is to do for backlinks. If you want traffic then you need to do banner or link exchange.

You should probably go down from 20 to 4-5 directories or even less a day. Also, try out article marketing you site. Its better or in my case, best form of marketing and getting backlinks.

In my opinions directories are not worth the trying. Generate quality content, get few links. Go to Digg, furl, del.icio.us... and pray :).

These directories that Amit submits to is not magic that approves all the submissions in one day. They can run from 3 days to 2 months depending on the queue of directories pending for approval. I've been doing some submissions for my clients and 85%-90% only approves after waiting 2 months. Some legit submissions just got dumped in the long list of pending approval, so I dont think its a spam anyways. The percent of being approved goes from 10-15% from days to weeks.
