Well, advertising like crazy, of course. Traffic exchanges, submitting to search engines, directories, social networking, etc. You advertise on as many places as possible. Work your butt off!
There's good traffic, and there's crap traffic. But if all you want is the traffic itself, then I'd be thinking very hard about something viral that was either hilarious, or extremely controversial. A good example might be the burger king subservient chicken, numa numa kid, where the hell is matt, or something like that. That's just funny - I could not think of anything controversial off the top of my head.
Sites get huge by building in loop mechanisms. There are two ways people are doing this these days, search and social. Search has been around for a while (obviously) and is the way a lot of sites build traffic with user generated content. People upload content, that content (which should be automatically optimized) gets indexed. Then when people search they stumble across the site, which then inspires more people to upload content, and the loop continues and the site grows. A perfect example of this is Wikipedia. Social mechanisms are another way to build traffic. These are a little bit more difficult to identify. Friend spam has been popularized by these "find a friend" tools, which don't work as well these days, but can still help. The same loop principle applies though just through features you build into your application. It's good to find other ways to drive traffic than search. Diversify you'll be less susceptible to the whims of Google. Chase
Previous member has mentioned two great tips on how to market efficiently. I truly agree on this point. There is nothing more greater than advertising and word of mouth. If I may add one more thing, shooting for organic search is another best way to get yourself out there. Although internet has many sources on SEO and advertising, try to invest some money on consulting with SEO experts. If you find the right one, they are able to catch the trend of where the search engine is leading to; moreover, they may even check your site to fix some minor or major errors. Ofcourse, if you're low on budget, you may also find books about advertising online. There are many successful websites out there without spending a dime on marketing; however, all successful sites have one thing in common. The secret is that these sites have done intensive research on online marketing. If you are good at finding things on your own, you have just saved some money in your pocket. Ping me if you have some questions on marketing.
Hey, we're doing great with ads on videos in YouTube. Our ad is inserted into thousands of videos that are downloaded and then re-uploaded to YouTube. We get tens of thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands to see our videos each day and we're always improving our ability to get them to our sites. Later.
Measure success by conversion. Sales or signup. BTW. We have sites that in 50k and below Alexa ranks.
hi, you need to work on building traffic & implement different methods so test which works for you, as there are sites that just used bum marketing & get this type of traffic.
Content all the way! If you have a site with valuable content, that no-one else has, you will be massive.
Thanks all for the imput, and thanks to the people that offered their help in PM (TrafficSales and chococat518), that's really cool of you. Again, I need to give more precisions, when I talk about traffic, I mean good quality traffic, traffic that comes back, traffic that clicks on ads and submit content, traffic that love your site and talk about it in real life or online. I hear a lot that good content is enough. Well I don't really agree with that. I mean, My website is in my sig, so you can judge for yourself, but so far I really had LOTS of positive feedback. The design is unique, the content is unique, it may appeal to lots of people (humor is like credit or weight loss etc.) Still, I don't have the traffic I am aiming for. (The website's been public for two months, spent less than 30 bucks in it so far) And when we talk about promotion, I don't think social bookmarking can bring the kind of traffic I am talking about, or I really suck at it. (We're talking 3M visitors/month) Also, you guys talk about promotion, which I really agree with, but could you be more precise? Should one advertise only in his niche? If it is general like dating or weight loss, should one just not care and advertise even on pron, medical or whatever niche? Should one try and find the smallest cpm or cpc? Only advertise on high quality website? Should one go and find xxxx's phone number and call him because he's the webmaster of yyyy website which is popular? Etc. etc. I'm asking lots of questions here, so I hope this thread can bring a lot to the community because let's face it: we'd all love to have bigger sites than we do at the moment.
I hear a lot that good content is enough. Well I don't really agree with that.[/QUOTE] Wow! Have fun growing... you have a long way to go. Leads me to wonder who you listen to. We all have to have someone to trust, just make sure they are leading you down the right path. In the New Media, content is king. Figuring out what to do with it, now that's debatable. But it starts with content or goes nowhere. Read what you just wrote, do you think you will get that kind of traffic without good content that speaks to the audience you are addressing? In the New Media, good content doesn't even need good dressing... go to YOuTube and check it out... there are only 12 Billion videos watched every month in the US along. The beginning, the end and the middle are all content driven in this user driven content New Media. What do you have your audience doesn't know, that's what they want, they don't care about the package. It's amazing to me how many people paint pictures of things that just aren't so. Sorry to burst you bubble but if you're going to the lengths it seems you are to make it work, get it right. good luck.
yeah for work you butt off but do it smart. use a lot of common sense. when someone says, just buy my program for $69 and you get a viral video. yeah, lots of common sense there huh! It all starts with good content... something your audience wants that they don't have now. Once that's in place, traffic is just like 'just dana' said, work your butt off but traffic answers become obvious. Remember, the New Media doesn't even care about what the delivery package looks like, just the content that draws them to you. If you do have good content, check out video ads on YouTube, they are getting results.
I'm really starting to think that my English sucks (actually I knew it already, it's not my first language sorry about that) Bluegrid2, what I meant is that good content is not enough. I do agree that it's a prerequisite though. And thanks for the advice, too
by taking massive action. And putting an organized promotion out there. Be consistent and track your success and failure, continue what works then cancel what doesn't. I have seen my results increase dramatically when I got together a specific plan and made a minimum for daily activity and slowly raised my activity. It took time at first with little reward then it just made a dramatic upturn fast.
You would have to look heavily into SEO, and think more long term rather than short. You could always use ppc as well.
