Well, let's take Yuwie as a test case. It seems to be pretty popular, and I know of individuals making over $100/month on their revenue sharing program and they had about 250,000 members last time I looked. Now, obviously the $100/month case is not the norm, so I will use my own situation as what is more likely to be 'normal' as an average user.

In the past couple of months, without too many referrals and not being incredibly active, I generated about $0.40 on average for the month. Now, since Yuwie pays 10 levels of referrals, and odds are I'm in someone's 10th level on their downline and thus on each level of someone's downline, that means they are paying a total of $0.40 to me and after all the percentages are calculated, another $0.40 to all of my upline based on my usage.

If that is an average user, then Yuwie pays out $0.80 per user per month or $200,000 per month based on 250,000 user base. So, really, you would just need to make sure that 250,000 users generating about 15 page views each (according to alexa) are sufficient to garner more than $200,000 per month or more than a CPM of $5.33, which is kind of high, honestly, but since it is revenue sharing, then if you aren't garnering as much from the traffic, neither will the user base.

If you add in the premium membership model or the purchased referrals then you add in another revenue stream on top of the advertising. :D

Its a trend that makes sense and is quite fair. Founders have made hundreds of millions of dollars with content created by users and given almost nothing in return. I predicted this would happen but there are even more unique ways of compensating users coming down the pipeline

So the point of these sites is.....to make money? IMO, it kind of defeats the point of having a social networking site that has to bribe people to use their service. Also, the biggest players in the social networking arena dont pay their users to participate. Its the ease of use and neat features that make social networking sites suceed.

From what I see here, a tiered payout system and "downlines" are pyramid scheme talk, and we know how all those work out. These sites also appeal to the money making crowd that go there for the sole purpose of making a quick buck. When they realize that the money isnt that good, will give up and leave.

A CPM of $5.33 is insanely high for a social networking site. As these sites grow in size, their CPM rates will fall to the point they wont be able to pay their users.

Issue is..isnt bribe exactly. Just as have been said, users do what they wanted to do, but this time they can have a profit out of it and not only the companies to get all the benefits. Cause sites like myspace made a very good profit really out of me and you.

Sites that pay users for specific actions (forum posting/blog comments/etc) are mostly sites that are in a saturated niche and they have to invest alot in action to get things rolling.

Then it will all become viral.
