Be careful with natural gas water heaters

I went to light my hot water heater 3 days ago after it went out. To make a short story long, BE CAREFUL relighting the pilot lights. I reached in with a lighter, lit the lighter, mashed the pilot light button, and blew the heater up. I have 2nd and 3rd degree burns on my arm now because of it.

So, again, please be careful when relighting a gas hot water heater.

what's the exact mechanism of your heater?

we have a natural gas water heater and it is fully automatic.

the flame starts as soon as the water starts to flow.

Same here - the water pressure sets off an electronic ignition (or something like that). I can hear the flames FWOOARUMP! when I turn on the hot tap.

I'm with Kerosene and sachin420. My boiler has the auto ignite thingy ma jiggy. Either your boiler is old or im guessing that the auto lighting part of it broken.

Happy to hear it wasn''t far worse. Hope your burns aren't too painful and wish you the best

It has always been very dangerous to ignite the flame of such gas heaters manually...

It would be in your best interest to quickly shun the old one and get an automated one...asap....

    Wish you a speedy recovery....mate.

    Thanks everyone,

I went electric with the replacement. I am not going to take any more chances with gas. I am thinking of changing all of my appliances to electricity. Perhaps this could eliminate anymore contributions from me to the big bang theory. :D
