I have used it for years. I know it is fun adding all of the plugins but be careful when doing it. Try to do some research on them and update them often. I had a bad experience with joomla
can you tell us what is the bad experience?i think we have to be carefull while installing any extensions to joomla, you can see the review in JED before you do some installation
One of them was a chat program. I am trying to remember the name. It has been a while. They basically used it to do a sql injection.
Not only Joomla, but basically all of CMS has it own critical-security issue (that's why there always an 'update') . Just be careful when you install any extension (plugin, component, template, etc), make sure this extensions made from trusted resource, if you know programming language, better if you check this extensions script before install it. Plus, install some security extensions to secure your joomla (you can find at extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security ). Don't forget to always update the joomla and all the extensions too. I got some virus, trojan, hacker, and another problem too with my joomla site.. but with these tips now I can safely run with joomla ..
I also interested in your bad experience, because I work with Joomla. Maybe you have used new version of Joomla1.6. Yes, it is new and had a lot of bugs. But now is available new security upgrade Joomla1.6.1. You just need update your softwarew and everything will be ok.
Wahala! I'm also into joomla and such discussions are healthy. It is nice to have a place where people can blast those developers who are out to take advantage of CMS users.
I personally have been able to use Joomla without any problems....I mean it's a completely free CMS and it is much better than others such as PHP Nuke and the like. There may be MANY security issues with plugins, but joomla 1.5.2+ seems pretty decent.
I also work with joomla system. Have some websites. Never had any probs. One time we were hacked by some people, but it was server hack, not a joomla hack. So my advise is simple if you want to have a safe system read some security tips. Don't install any "no-name" plugins, do some research first. Always backup system. Three simple steps. They always help me.
I started to think different maybe Joomla is good for website, but it is a huge system. For starters it can be tricky. For example I planned to hire coder for my joomla + virtuemart, after he started to work we had some chats. As he said it's to hard to make new template a lot of code work and so. So I came back to Wordpress I like simplicity. Now I use WP eCommerce. Simple and easy. I am not saying that Joomla is bad, but sometimes people find joomla complicated.
Nothing is secure, if you are not a smart user or developer! Its we , who are responsible for inviting a hack or preventing it. Here is my suggestion, For Joomla, never install any 3rd party extension, without checking its reviews or the vulnerability list. For Wordpress, dont just keep installing any number of 3rd party plugins. Most of them either dont work or are buggy. Choose the best according to your needs and use it.
be carefull with extentions, especially that are new or unknown. Much sites used joomla and some people want to hack
I look at the same way I do my personal computer...if you do not keep up with the latest updates...eventually you will have issues. It is a dance between finding the right extensions with the chosen template...usually good results and support using Yootheme (jquery) and Rockettheme (mootools). Still waiting for the extensions to catch up with J1.6 though.
I personally don't recommend 1.6 or 1.7 when that comes out. I'm sticking with 1.5 until 1.8 comes out, which is actually closer than you think. Joomla does an outstanding job removing any extensions from its online directory that poses any kind of a security issue. Plus, there are some great security extensions. Joomla and WP are very different, so they shouldn't even be compared. If you wan't a simpler setup with less functionality, go WP. More power, go Joomla. For security, back up your site often, get a security package with your hosting account, and check your 3rd party plugins regardless of CMS
Some plugins can cause your site to crash and very troublesome to delete it via database if you don't have any knowledge much about database...so be careful...
