Be Careful When Selling Domain Names

I'm a member of many domain forums and a full-time domaineer. Recently, there has been a few scams with buy/sell of domain names.

The suspect is the Buyer and victim is the Seller.

The Buyer will use a scenario and ask to buy your domain names. Buyer gives his price to make the Seller feel good in selling to him/her. The Buyer will send money. Seller transfer domain name. After full transfer of domain names, Buyer ask for refund or uses false account. Seller never gets money and Buyer gets domain name.

So watch out when doing private sales. Use escrow or use auctions like Sedo or Afternic. Use only private if persona has made many sales to other parties. In DNforum they have a feedback system but nonetheless, be aware of these type of scams.

    Thanks for the advise...

I had something 'sort of' similiar happen to me, I bought a domain, sent money via paypal, and the domain was pushed to me, then a week later, I noticed a refund in my paypal account, with a note attched from the seller, stating that the money was not enough...

I assume the individual changed their mind about the sale and were going to try and get the domain back somehow, It must have failed however, as I still own the domain, not only that but what I paid for it I got back... strange... lol

I couldn't really think of anything else to do but leave it like that, If I tried to repay, they would have probably declined it...

Nothing new, but good advice regardless.

Another scam that is getting pretty popular is the 'appraisal' tactic. Basically, you (as a domain owner) get an email with a (usually extremely high) offer for your domain. You reply, saying that you're interested, and in response the 'buyer' tells you to first order a domain appraisal service (costs you $20 or $30 which is nothing compared to the few $k he's offering you for the domain). Obviously, the 'appraisal service' is bogus and as soon as you get the appraisal (or, well, pay the money in order to get one), the buyer is suddenly not interested in your domain any longer.

By the way guys - the single best thing to do when selling domains is selling them through Sedo's escrow. Much cheaper than Escrow.com and you pretty much eliminate the risk of being scammed.

It will be hard for the buyer get away with the domain. Seller can always file complains. However seller is the one loosing time and money dealing with this.

There is another thread (now closed) saying that it is hard to have GoDaddy reverse a transaction when the seller asks Paypal for a refund. Is this also true with other registrars like NameCheap?

there are many ways to perform secure sales/purchases and private sale is not one of them. Why do you think almost each registrar has its own domain market place, why Sedo, Buydomains exist? When you buy/sell a domain on a marketplace, transactions are scanned for fraud which you as an individual cannot do. Yes, you will have to pay some fees, but isn't peace of mind worth it?

The issue is still very prevalent. People continue to file chargebacks, reversals, disputes, etc after paying for domains or any product/service. I would not say the issue has improved at all.
