Be careful online and offline

I know that many of us are used to the normal scams of "Paypal" asking us to give them our login and password, or some rich person needing us to transfer $100,000,000,000 for them in our bank account. But I just wanted to give a quick word of warning for those who aren't as careful offline.

There has been a recent scam where people will put a "trap" in an ATM machine to trap your ATM card and not let it out (they'll insert a tiny black film that you probably won't notice). When they see you having trouble with your card, they'll approach you and convince you to type in your pin while they press cancel at the same time. This way, they get your pin.

Then after you can't get your card out still, you'll leave in frustration to contact your bank. Then they come back, take your card, and use your pin to withdraw money from it.

A police officer I know verified this with a bank to make sure it was real, and apparently it's quite common.

I don't normally post such warnings, but I believe that it serves as a good reminder that the internet isn't the only place that you have to be careful with your credit/ATM information.

They press "cancel" while the card holder enters his PIN?

Any moron that would enter their PIN in front of a stranger like that deserves to lose a bit of $$ just so they learn a lesson. :p

You always take extra cash of your hard earned cash. I'd rather leave my ATM capture inside the machine than to seek the help of an anonymous guy.

That's a bit like approaching someone having "trouble putting money in their wallet".

Anyone approaching me while I'm doing anything at an ATM gets a poke in the eye. :p

Although, the sad thing is, is there are lots of morons around :(

Sounds like a nasty scam though.

The problem that you mention, briankoz, has been getting a lot of press lately:
    http://www.kten.com/Global/story.asp?S=5785458

Consumers should be extra diligent in using ATMs and report problems right away. If your card gets stuck, have your cell phone handy and call the help number featured on the machine. In addition, call the local police to alert them of the problem.

The best way to avoid problems with ATMs is to always use the ATM of your bank, unless you are in an emergency. Even if you are in an emergency, always use an ATM machine that is located in a crowded place. It will be next to impossible for people to use this trick if there are constantly people around.
