You need to change the name servers at GoDaddy to those provided at HostGator

I don't know the particulars of either hosts, but one way is that you "add a domain" in you hostgator account, and enter your details. Then lookup the "nameservers" for your hostgator account. In you godaddy dns management, replace the default nameservers with the ones from hostgator. It will take upto 48 hours for the dns to propagate, and you'll be good to go..

Hostgator has a few handy vidoes too, a reasonably decent help section, theres the forum of theirs but as wragge11 pointed out, its pretty much as simple as doing what he suggested.

It is better to keep the hosting provider and the registrar separate.

You simply need to change the DNS of your domain to those at Hostgator- eg change it to ns1.myhostingsite.com and ns2.myhostingsite.com.
