Get lots of good content. Meta tags aren't that useful anymore, just make sure your META Description is good for when you get on google. This is referred to as onpage seo. Get backlinks from article submissions, dofollow forum signature links, and dofollow blog posting. This is referred to as offpage seo. Keep adding unique content (or similar content) every so often to keep your website fresh.

That's a very cool list, Stomper, thanks. I think the technique of analyzing on page and then off page is correct. SEO generally takes quite a while if you are just starting, but imo can have better results than PPC after a while.
