Basic question re: dedicated hosting

    Hi all,

While dreaming of the future filled with grand armored trucks of cash, it occurred to me that I may need a dedicated server if I ever hit that point ;)

That raised what is sure to be a very basic question:

When you have a dedicated server at a host (like Hostgator) is it up to me to do security patches, kernel updates, etc. or is that something the company I'm paying the (rather large) monthly fee to will do? Basically, the "everyday" sysadmin type stuff I'm wondering about.

I figured that a co-lo server would be up to me whereas a dedicated server provided by a host would handle all of that for me, but I'm unsure.

    Thanks!
    Mike

you can get managed or unmanaged dedicated servers. Most are unmanaged meaning you do updates, you install software, you make sure it is secure. If you don't feel like you can do that yourself you might look toward a fully managed server. They are more expensive, but it might be a better fit for you.

Platinum Server Management very high quality reputation (or so I've heard), remote server manegement, tons of stuff they will do, all for only $29 per month.

Sounds like a great deal, once I'm finally ready.

Has anyone tried tham, I'd be interested to hear how good they are. I'm paying a pretty high price at the moment for a managed dedicated server. The support is great but it should be at the price I'm paying.
