hey there! I am forced to look out for a VPS host since my webhost (shared hosting) is continuously bullying me to upgrade to their vps. But I will never buy their vps, so please advice me about few things- 1. How easy or difficult is it to manage an unmanaged VPS with minimal knowledge of linux? 2. Can that be neutralized by going for cpanel/plesk addon? 3. Pls suggest a vps provider with good support, reliable hosting and (if possible) cheaper rates. Thanks Raju
There are managed vps service providers that give you 10 GB for about $20 a month. When it is a server, it is mandatory that you have a bit of knowledge about the server. Otherwise things might piss you off. I had a mailing issue and a dns issue with my earlier provider, and they never helped me, and I had to move to jaguarpc, and they fixed the issue quite soon.
with my initial analysis, I never found a good/reliable host who provides MANAGED VPS for less than $25.
Your correct rajupp that's really the lowest. a2hosting is the only one I've seen that even goes that low. I'd say on the low end you'll want between $30-40/month.
You don't need to know linux to manage a VPS, you will have a control panel like cPanel and you can start from there. I have 2 VPS's with vexxhost.com with lxadmin control panel and I am doing well, and I know nothing about linux.
Thanks, i am still learning about VPS and surely there are lot of "myths" involved in my understanding. I just figured out both layershift and knownhost provide managed VPS with plesk/cPanel for less than $25 per month. I am currently inclined towards layershift for the fact that their responses (from sales team) has been very accurate, detailed and co-operative. Knownhost too was not bad. I will decide upon the VPS host for my blog 9in signature below) within few hours from now (hopefully )
Hi Rajupp, I'm not sure about Lunarpages but we usually do not recommend customers who are having resource usage issues on shared plans to upgrade to a VPS as usually you will find that the overhead of VPS's operating system almost cancels out the gains. (We recommend VPS for shared customers who need more control or custom software.) It's true that some custom tuning you can probably get your site to work better on a VPS you really need to be experienced to do so. Some providers do offer semi-dedicated packages which are basically the same as regular shared hosting but only but a few customers on the server and allow a lot more resource usage.
Setting up a VPS without Linux is actually not very difficult, most providers will install the control panel for you. I strongly recommend not using Plesk or CPanel, as they use too many resources and CPanel servers are constantly hacked. I recommend you go with DirectAdmin or LxAdmin, as they use minimal resources and have all the features you would want and need. If you PM me I can give you some recommendations. One thing you should be careful with when it comes to VPS is to find out of their servers are overloaded and oversold, this still happens with VPS too. Usually the cheapest price means, reliability and speed will be sacrificed. Good luck
1. How easy or difficult is it to manage an unmanaged VPS with minimal knowledge of linux? You have to look into security aspect & server optimization for the vps too. So, it will require some extensive knowledge. 2. Can that be neutralized by going for cpanel/plesk addon? Yes, with a web gui like cpanel/plesk , it make your life easily. Create account & setup mysql all through the browser. alternatively, you can look into using lxadmin but be reminded that it is using lighttpd instead of apache.. you can't use mod rewrite . 3. Pls suggest a vps provider with good support, reliable hosting and (if possible) cheaper rates. May i know what is your budget?
