Banner links pass PR?

If someone places one of my banners on their website instead of a text link how much will this have a negative effect? I know I won't get any anchor text credit, but can a link from a banner at least pass some PR?

you can get something similar to anchor text by using alt text on the image.

you'll get PR and the quasi-anchor-text benefits as long as it's a straight, normal link. (ie, www.yourdomain.com, not www.yourdomain.com?site=blah or some other funky url..)

Do people believe that text links and alt links are equally effective links from an SEO perspective?
It's something which I'm a bit confused over, but I would be interested to hear people's opinions on.

This is not how PR works. You do not loose any PR because you link to someone.

even generic links to your site will help your rankings. Take a look at sites like HGTV; they have listings all over home & garden topics. Does anyone think people link to lots of their internal pages? Not likely - vast majority of links come right to their home page. The effects filter down to the other pages.

An image linked without alt text passes PR.

An image with alt text is generally speaking treated the same as a text link.

What makes any text link or alt image link most valuabe (all other factors equal) is where it is placed in the code.

For example - a text link mid paragraph towards the top of a page is considered more valuable than a text link in a footer amongst several other links.

Moral to the story - use alt text wherever possible with banners and if you can have whatever you want - go for the text link mid paragraph before the bulk of other links within the code.

[within the code] this means visually, a link in a left menu can look like it comes first, reading left to right / top to bottom... but it depends on where it is in the code from the spider's perspective. One page can look the same and order links differently depending on how it is structured.
