Banner - Flash vs No Flash

I am running a contest to replace my banner http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=374436.

The flash proposal looks pretty cool. Other than the size, can anyone fill me in on any disadvantages to using a flash banner.

P.S. I would be happy to see some fellow DPers join the contest.

The end user will have to have Flash installed on their machine ... although it's a very smaller percentage of people who don't have Flash installed. Don't know of anything else that would be a disadvantage.

I suggest not to use flash banner. Many of my friends do not have flash player installed in their system. Even if you add a option to download flash player no body is going to do that for want of virus activites. I suggest imageready animated gifs.

I was also wondering what to use but since you think imageready animated gifs are better I guess I’ll give it a try. ;)

Or what you can do is request for the flash source file and use Macromedia Flash and publish it as a .gif file. The issue with that is that it doesn't provide much optimzation features and the generated .gif file is usually really huge. But it might be worth giving it a try.

I hate flash! It is so time consuming and SE's don't like it at all.
