Banner advert impression counting

I am new to banner advertising and I really need some help tracking a banner ad I just placed on my site before my client starts asking me for figures.

The problem is that I thought I would just check my logs for banner1.gif and see how many times it had been called but the results for this were far lower than they should be because the page count for the pages that host the ad were a lot higher.

Is this because of image cacheing? If so, how do you get around this? WHat is the best method of reporting banner impressions without using advanced ad software?

You could try to use this one:

    http://phpadsnew.com/two/

Your client can log in anytime and view impressions and clicks.

You probably should use some software to count impressions/ clicks or you will appear very unproffesional.

The logs should report 304 document not modified, if the user agent requested the image conditionally. The image won't be sent, but you should see this fact in the logs
