Hello people, I was thinking about this idea for quite sometime yet I've never actually tried to experiment with it and I was wondering if you guys could offer some input as to how this might work. The idea is to build a viral site getting around 4,000 backlinks in two months time and then switching the entire topic of the site to a topic that is much harder to get backlinks to. I realize that a good number of backlinks could be lost over time but I'd bet that a lot of them would stick as they'd never be noticed. Has anyone ever done this? If so did it work? What are your general thoughts on this practice? Thanks
Deceptive and unethical. I would hope that any reputable hosting company and registrar would drop you and cancel your domain registration. Also, after @&!?ing that many people, I would think you'd be looking over your shoulder for quite sometime and forget about establishing any future relationships with other webmasters.
An alternate strategy is to have the viral site give a powerful series of links to the target site. Or to entrench the viral component in the site - as a feature - but make it clear that it's for a limited time. After that leave it online, but on a deeplink rather than your home page and let the viral effect continue to build.
Deceptive indeed, but deceptive enough to work. There might be some problems though with the deep links, they would be dead links after the switch. Anyway if you choose this path be aware that indeed some backlash may show up as bunnybling has put it. It is your choice in the end. Regards, George
I could care less about the second step - can you do the first step? If so, why not just sell your services for creating sites with 4000 backlinks in two months. That would be gold and I would be more than happy to pay.
Bunnybling I see your point but I don't know if I'd go so far to say that you'd be F@#$ing anyone. The links obtained over the two months would be from sites that have mostly time sensitve articles such as blogs and social networking sites. Also, by no means did I mean go out and contact other webmasters for link exchanges. I think it's an interesting notion to think about and not so far off from what others such as the $15,000 Challenge guy is doing. Edit: Creating a site with 4,000 backlinks in 2 months time isn't all that hard for me if I pick popular topic. The difficult thing for me is getting links to a site with a fairly unpopular subject. @geegel, I really don't think there would be any backlash as it could be done in a way that looked natural. Also, this is just an idea to get the juices going. I'm just trying to think outside the box.
sarahk is perfectly right. And the biggest advantage for you is that the site will last for years instead of months.
Other sites link to yours, you do the switch and become a "bad neighborhood", penalizing anyone who is linked to you and your unethical behavoir.
Although I agree with you I doubt any registrar or hosting provider would do that, infact, such a suggestion in laughable. Everyone is in business to make money and over such a questionable issue im sure they would not cut you off. As for whether it would work, I highly doubt it. You would just be wasting time, effort and any money you invest. Im pretty sure most search engines which drop the original incoming links, they are pretty clever at detecting things like this - for example, when domains expire they will drop all incoming links and they usually require a reinclusion request. Why not just build up partially related websites or blogs and put links towards the smaller "unpopular niche" site. It sounds like you would have to build up the content for the topic anyway so whats the point? I've found that a much better way to harvest pagerank and traffic.
Why would it become a "bad neighborhood"? @venturefox. Well, I wasn't thinking this would be something to do to get traffic. I'd think the benefit would be in the backlinks. Even with ten blogs related to the topic of the unpopular blog it'd still pale in comparison to the effect of 4,000 links from unrelated sites I would think. I think it's an interesting idea and have no plans of doing it but I have a feeling that there are others out there using this technique.
This could be a concept worth pursuing, however it seems that the links wouldnt be of the same quality when your site changes. IE the link text perhaps doesnt fit anymore The text surrounding the link (likely a story or review) wouldnt fit your new site. As to how.. well some people have a large budget. I'm fairly certain i could create some kind of 2.0 site and get people to come if im spending a couple thousand on marketing. Gaining thousands of quality backlinks to my site would be worth i to me.
