Baffled by FTP settings

    - Created a hosting account years ago. Still have same hosting account with Hostgator

    - The hosting account used to be under "www.abc.com". That domain, registered previously with Godaddy, is no longer registered to me, and has not been for months. It is currently available and parked on one of those default spam/crap landing pages.

    - I registered a new domain recently, www.xyz.com, and switched the hosting account under Hostgator to www.xyz.com, so I could use it again.

    - Opened up Filezilla, and clicked on the old saved profile, under www.abc.com, to change it. To my surprise, it still worked, and accessed the file structure.

This old ftp account is configured to access the host, ftp.abc.com -- which is no longer registered to me.

    How is this possible?

Is hostname configured as ServerIP or ftp.abc.com in the FileZilla profile? If it is serve IP, then it will connect without any problem. If the hostname is ftp.abc.com, then it shouldn't connect as its not resolving to the server IP. If it is still working with ftp.abc.com, then check the hosts file of your local machine.. may be you had added an entry of the domain name abc.com to point to the server IP.
