I've been following up some sites I manage by using the "inurl" search on Googlet. A few of them have some unusual results showing redirect links we're not familiar with. How does one tell if a redirect (intentionally or unintentionally) is stealing pagerank and backlinks from a site? For example, this redirect came up while doing an inurl search on Missionstone.com. I'm guessing that the site is running Google Adsense, is that correct? amos.shop.com/amos/cc/main/redirect_track/ccsyn/13592/act/http:%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fsa%3Dl&q%3Dhttp:%2F%2Fwww.missionstone.com&ai%3DBkEY--kXcQbGlDYnSOdOMlYcCnonnBd6LwpAB-KPjpAGQ5SIQBRgFIKxQKAhIoDmqAQhhbHR1cmEtMcgBAQ&num%3D5/trk/googleads/trkd/Fireplace%2520Mantels,www%252Emissionstone%252Ecom,product_categories,1,0 What if the redirect doesn't include specific identifiers? Or simply lists things like "link_click_out.php" or "action="free_link"? I was assuming that this was something a directory might use, but how do I make sure? Thanks!
How would someone use a redirect to steal your page rank and backlinks? Is your site indexed in Google?
Use this to see how they redirect: http://www.seologic.com/webmaster-tools/url-redirect.php If it's 302... Start worrying!
You have me worried now. I managed to get an old host of mine to 301 redirect my old personal home page (were the site first started) at www.innotts.co.uk/zephyr. Using the above tool this redirected as a 301 as expected. But as these pages were set up when ~ home directories were popular a fair few links were to www.innotts.co.uk/~zephyr using the same tool I get HTTP/1.1 302 Found Could this be causing me problems? Thanks for any advice.
A search on the old url with a ~ does take me straight to the new location. Does that mean all is well and I can get back to doing something useful?
I'll give it a go but won't hold my breath. The old URL is now hosted by a company which has been taken over twice since my original contract expired (the days when your site was with you ISP). I was very surprised when I saw the site was still live and even more so when they agreed to a 301 without any form of payment. All I can do is ask and see what they say. Thanks for the advice.
Thanks to you guys for bringing up this post as I've explored a little and managed to do a 301 redirect in php. Excellent timing as I've just changed my urls
Thanks for the tool Tops. I guess if something shows up as a 302 my only recourse is to ask the domain owner to take it down, and hope that they do? I suppose I could also contact their hosting company and domain registrar...and cross my fingers.
Just an update....I was able to get one redirect taken down by emailing the webmaster. It was from an older version of directory script they'd been using. THey'd updated but the old files were still live.
Can someone take a look at this C21 site/page, http://www.c21usa.com/Nevada/Las_Vegas-Real-Estate-Agents.html, and and tell me if that site is using bad redirects?
