Bad planning - Bad domain - hurting site

I have a specific forum that is dead. I think that one of the biggest reasons is that the domain is long and doesn't necessarily match the topic of the site.

I have done a lot of work on the site have 30k pages indexed, 100s of links noticed in G so it pains me to move.

I am wondering what is the better way to tackle this with minimal impact. Should I start a brand new site then at some later time merge the DBs? Or should I get a new domain and then park it ontop for the time being, get links for it and then move on make it the main domain and 301 re-direct.

Or lastly should I try to deal with the domain that I have.

 

I would say get a relevant aged domani (much easier for you) and do a 301 re-directfrom your old domain to new.

if there is a forum, merging their db's will be a very difficult process

 

I am using VB for the forum so the merging is rather straight forward.....

 

I meant if you start a new sites and there are new users with same username, what would happen then?
