Do you ever regret naming your directory with the name you gave it. Just wondering as I called my new directory Money Marmoset. I was trying to find a domain name with the words finance in but soon gave up, so I went for money. After a while I realised that nearly every combination of letters in the english language has already been registered. In the end I tried animals beginning with M because it rhymed with Money. Now I wish I called my directory Money Marmalade, it would be so cool to have a niche directory just for people with sites about Marmalade covered money I mean Marmosets with money is just too narrow a niche. So what's the story behind your directory name?
Pulsedirectory. It had the word directory in it, so no obvious mistakes of what it is. Pulse, as in like alive, existing, suggests still going, not too long either and trying to create a brand was not even worth considering so i figured keep it simple. Its a directory, its called pulsedirectory, nothing more.
I named my website links directory; The CIS Website Links Directory, because it is part of the Corporate Internet Solutions - Website Hosting website. I am still making a lot of changes and migrating to the new site over time. I am building the directory and shall be adding many articles to the directory and content to the website. ~ Mike
webmastersheaven.net a useful resource of links for all webmasters, still its in early stage, but i am trying hard to make it best
I don't regret naming my directory mexabet, since it's doing well on SERPs for my optimized keywords. It appears on the first pages of Google, Yahoo and other search result pages. You're not alone. And by the way, does the word "Google" make much sense to anyone, if not for the fact that the company behind the name is a giant?
Oh, I don't know if Google was such a far out there name idea. I think of eyes as in google-eyed or googly-eyed. So something that helps you search out something else is sort of related. Or perhaps the two genius fellows who named it got googly-eyed thinking about all the millions they would make one day, or perhaps they just liked the sound of an old-fashioned car horn gaooogah, gaooogah. lol Going back to the original question, both of my directory names were selected to match the personality of the site. Crafty Tips was a name we came up with early and had assumed was already taken. After spending several days looking for something similar we finally checked what we kept coming back to - duh. On that site every listing shares a crafty tip - so the name is a perfect match. Pet Site Guides is also named for exactly what the site does - it's a collection of guides for finding pet websites. Each category is a guide to finding sites about that type of pet. I avoided using the term directory in both names because I didn't want to be just a "directory".
google was a mistake. it was suppose to be googol, which is the largest commonly known number: 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (1 + 100 0's) As for dump, it represented exactly what the niche was(lots of sh*t (hence the 'dump' in the name) directories) not just back in 2006, but even more these days.
With us, went for simplicity and impact. None of this xxxxx.directoryfor-utodayifyourluckybutthisnamewon'tstandout.biz.usa.org/ naff way of thinking. Only way to go was a short domain, that explains what we are, and not spell out the bloody obvious fact 'we are a directory'. We found this only insults our searchers as we feel their intelligent enough to work out that we are a directory without stuffing the site with the word directory 500 times. We also deliberately didn't copy other directories (not in content or design), as our aim was to grab attention and capture the traffic. Being unique, and the domain itself had to reflect our service. So I would say the name is the 2nd most important part of a business, besides the service/product - and even more so on the web: where the need to be noticed is vital
I normally decide on the name base on three reasons: 1. Number of searches per month. 2. And the second is because I just like it. 3. Plus it's easy to remember So I have no regret with My Web Searches directory name.
FruityDirectory? Fruits are health, the word is brandable and easy to remember. So yeah, no regrets at all.
Yes, I know that is where the name really came from; I was referring to what the name made me think of as well as trying to be a little cheeky. (I obviously failed on the second part.) I guess I'm not as geeky as my family thinks I am if when I think about the name I think about eyes and looking for something. I've always found the psychology of these self-deprecating names and how well they often work to be interesting. There was a small restaurant chain in Texas that called themselves the "Worst Bar-B-Que in Texas" or something similar. They of course had great food and were always jammed. The first time we ate there was due to the name. I think dump fits your personality and definitely makes for a unique brand.
businessespana Not too much to work out there farflungshores This is a travel directory and I wanted to conjour up the image of tropical beaches and isolated atolls.... As I always build sites for the human visitor I believed both of these to be better than the "fantastic urls" that come out as "qxyb.info" and the like....
We went with LinkPlug! We felt it was great for a directory, hinting at what it does without being too explicit, and eliciting an 'electric' or dynamic feel. Submitters could "plug" their link — user could "plug" into the directory. Had a logo designed by another DP member that looked great — we're really proud of it. I agree with RedKnight that names, logos, and the overall visual impression of a site is extremely important in the directory business.
