Bad idea to update the content of a page?

So I was thinking of making some content changes to the main page of one of my sites, but I'm not sure if this could really hurt my site's rankings? I would say that I will be changing about 70% of what is already there. Any ideas or advice?

Yes, it will if you change some of the important keywords or keyphrases.

I suggest you to check your google.com/webmaster on the keywords that your page ranked good in SERP ranking and avoid removing this keywords from your main contents.

It may affect as its ranking may go down for couple of days ( how many? don't know exactly) but if you think the changes may produce better results go for it.

Yes, I ended up ranking for the stupidest keywords despite my best efforts. So I want to go back and rework some of the content more efficiently so that hopefully I'll rank better this time for what I want to rank for. thanks to both for the advice!!

Content is a major part in SEO, If you have a fresh and most unpalatable one, you will win.

    Good luck

Content changes are not bad idea. But you must be ready for dropping of site rankings. However, if you add quality content and make on-page optimization, you'll get back a good position of your site in google search. Of course, you need time for it, but google likes content that is frequently updated, because users like it.

I would be careful about changing too much content on the page. If you are making minor changes that should be fine...just make sure to keep you targeted keywords on the page. Also be careful about changing the meta tag title. I did that on one of my sites and my rankings changed drastically and took a long time to come back.

It'll probably be better in the long run, you wouldn't have a reason to change it otherwise. It might hurt at first, but you'll pull out of it later.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking that I can take a hit for a little while, because the site isn't doing me much good at the moment. Might as well get it over with.

Cyberprofit: I had the meta title tag thing happen to me once too, so I know what a blow that can be. The best way to learn this stuff is through trial and error. Nothing wrong with failing every now and then - the lesson sticks with ya longer ;)
