Bad directory practice, please help?

I have recently submitted to a directory (i won't name at this stage). This submission was $69. My site was added at the top catagory level which has a PR6 and is regularly indexed by Goolge, when the confirmation email arrived they have added it to some lame sub index that has not even been indexed by Google for 6 weeks and has no PR at all.

I have gone through my submission again and it even says a top submission, I have emailed them for a response which i am now waiting for but i thought i would seek the opinion of other directory owners as to whether this is common practice or not????

understandable maybe for a free submission but $69 was for a strong submission.

Any advice would be most welcome.

You need to contact them again, any number of posts on here are not going resolve the issues you have with the directory submission

Make sure that your submission at the top category was acceptable in the TOR at that review price

I am sure that if it is a reputable directory, it will all get smoothly sorted out

Did you check the guidelines and the TOS of the directory? Do they accept sites at the top level categories?

Edit to add: About the title "Bad directory practice" . It is not bad directory practice it is standard directory practice. Sites should be placed according to relevance not according to PR.

they do accept submissions at top level because they have about 10 in place all relevent (as is mine) there is also no indication of any extra charge at this level, it just gives you the option to submit.

If this is the 'dangled carrot' to get you to submit for your $69 and put you somewhere else then whether standard or not - IT IS NOT GOOD PRACTICE either in the business world or the internet world this is what i intend to find out so that their submission instructions are made clearer!

    title is correct

Office man, unless we know which directory or what the terms are that the directory in question is using it is pretty difficult for us to answer your question.

You have to bear in mind that with most directories you are not paying for placement you are paying for your web site to be reviewed and included. Pretty much every directory I have come across reserves the right to move your submission to an alternate category.

Are you sure you havent paid for a 'Featured' spot? It is rare for directories to offer guaranteed placement in the 'Top' categories even for a higher submission price.

Directory owner reserves the rights to move a link to the most appropriate category.
Link placement is not according to $$ on any directory.

Just cause there are links on top level, DOES NOT mean that they currently still accept links on top-level. Did they state if u must submit to the subcategories? Like my directories, when i first started out, i allowed submission to top-level categories as i was still refining the categories and adding new ones. When I add new subcategories, i expect ppl to place their links there and no more on top-level ones (stated clearly in submission guidelines of course).

So u shld confirm the guidelines and if its still unclear, u have every right to complain and ask for a refund if necessary :)

I believe that if the directory says top level listing for featured listing it should be top level listing. I have had several similar experiences and to be honest it did make me a bit mad as well.
Some directory owners stop listing websites in some top categories, but this is not mentioned anywhere.
On the other hand, you should wait for a response from directory owner before posting things like that here. Because I am sure it will be resolved.

please don't missunderstand, i have contacted them and am sure that they will try to resolve the problem - i am trying to avoid any future problems as i intend to buy many more listings of the coming months and if i need to email each one before i pay for submission to confirm the placing then so be it - at least i know.

I have been through the submission guidelines several times now and they definatley lead you to believe you are submitting to the top catagory, however i understand that its difficult for people to give their view without knowing.

I look forward to posting a good outcome for both parties soon.

    Thanks for tips

PS already seen a good directory for paid submission in this thread, DP lot are a pretty useful crowd!!

Sometimes it's best to contact the directory owners/editors prior to submitting if their guidelines are vague or unclear.

Most directory owners I know are willing to openly communicate with you and answer questions and concerns.

    Let's hope so.
