Are there any bad directories out there that I should avoid?

Just don't link back to any directory that you think is shady or might be a "bad neighborhood". Being listed in one won't hurt you...or someone could ruin their competition by submitting them to web directories.

If you are looking for a good directory, I can recommend to you mine: panaonline dot us (don't understand why I can't place a hyperlink, but oh well). E-mail me if you have any difficulties with it also.

What's good about it? Looks like a free version of a popular script (with a free template) with the footer links removed?

If you're willing to remove the required links from the footer, who knows what else you'd do.

I think bad directories can be clearly differentiated from good ones without any issues.

I doubt anyone has a list.

Look over the directory and it's fairly easy to tell for yourself...

    1. Look at the new sites category, check the dates, will generally tell you if sites are being added.

    2. Are there titles like "Party Favors, Paper Plates, Tablecloth Rentals, Invitations and Everything You Need for Parties"? i.e. a giant list of keywords rather than site titles.

    3. Are the categories being held tight to topic? Or are they simply accepting anything?

There's plenty more to look for and I would suggest a read of the stickies at the top of the forum. There's also probably a number of threads here on what makes a good or bad directory.

Well he did point out a good example of a bad directory. Come on, free template providers provide templates free for the link, removing the links aren't ethical. If one can't even keep basic copyrights, how can we expect that he can run a proper and good directory?

You are right but remember that anyone that has not worked extensively with that script would not know the template was free and the copyright restrictions attached to it.

Not actually, readme files and those files inside the footer etc would have clearly indicated that these are not to be removed. Anyone who can setup a script should know the implications. Not knowing the legal implications and the law is no defense in a court of law.

Look for directory lists and research which ones have a good ibq. Being listed in bad directories won't hurt but can be a huge waste of time.

thanks for the info. I guess I posted a loaded question by asking for bad directories. I'm sure there are tons out there. I'll search the forums for possible "good" directories.
