Can someone please tell me how to differentiate between a good and bad back link? Is every back link with a PR of 0 considered bad? Is every back link that is not related to my niche considered bad? Are back links coming from article submission sites now considered bad? I would love to understand this better!

do every thing according to Google guideline ,. don't use auto submitter, always get back link from related and high or minimum same page rank website which you have.

There's no such thing as a "bad" link. A link will either carry weight (or not). And PageRank is irrelevant. The focus should be on domain authority. PR is a pointless number that's easily manipulated.

Back links from article sites aren't "bad", just hold very little value.

It's about quality, not quantity. It's not about making links, but gaining. Give people a reason to link to you (content people like, enjoy, is informative and relevant). Some of these links might never even be discovered by Google, but send you traffic. For example, you make a comic and someone posts a link on Facebook and even 10% of their 585656 "friends" visit you got some good organic traffic. Not only that, but some of those people like it so much, they share it elsewhere, blog about it, or whatever. Those links (even if PR0) will have far more value than any spam you do yourself.
