Check out what I had to say about whether or not you should backup your site! I was scared... but now relieved.
you definetly need to backup. you'll be pretty upset if the hoster looses your data which already happend to me some times and if you have backup it'S not a big deal to set up the site with another hoster but without its really time consuming
Well most host's don't backup your data on multiple computers, thus it would be good to do such your self. I backup copies of all the VPS servers I host and all of my clients sites once every 48 hours and place them on 3 different computers. I haven't had a site I couldn't get back yet, and believe me people ask me if I can restore their sites alot.
100% safe; backup to Amazon S3 encrypted. They have multiple locations automatically, are cheap, very fast and easy to use; http://brainfish-eat-fishbrain.blogspot.com/2009/01/simple-non-bloated-script-for-amazon-s3.html

Yeah I was just extremely lucky the technicians were able to recover my data even without the operating system booting up.
