    Hi,

I manage my own wordpress website and run it on a hosting package that uses linux and MySQL database.

I am new to all this and want to know what steps I can and should take to ensure my site is secure and backed up.

    • How do I back up my site?
    • What exactly do I need to backup?
    • What steps do I need to take to ensure my site is secure?

    Thanks

Your host should already be providing the basics regarding security. Make sure your wordpress install is always up-to date andif you want to backup, backup your database and files, that's all there is to it :) There are some plugins on the wordpress site which do that for you.

    Hi,

You have couple option to backup your site.
    1. If you have CPanel access to your site you can use built in backup program. Make sure you choosing a full backup button. Full backup will be backup everything from your account included your mysql database.
    2. If you have shell access to your web site then you can backup by command line utilities.
    3. You can manual backup MYSQL database with mysqladmin and copy every file from your home directory to your hard-drive.

You will be need backup your MYSql database and your files from home directory.

If you using any of method to backup your site be sure check your backups regularly! Because lot of people forgot to check they backup files and when they need to restore then found out backup files is corrupted.

If you have any future question don't hesitate ask me.

    Hello,

Full backups are bandwidth and resources consumers. Backup from cPanel are manual, data are stored on your server, archives are not encrypted. There are tools like Website 2 Backup to do automatic, encrypted and selected website files and databases backups, sent to email, FTP, or locally. Backups can be sent to 2 storages, and the restoration system is integrated.

Also depending upon your web host, your website may already be backed up fully every night with the possibilities of weekly and monthly too. As mentioned above, cPanel has the ability for you to take a full backup of your site or just parts of it. WordPress too also has the option to backup your site through the WP admin interface.

In regards to security, you'll want to make sure that you WP version is always at the latest. Not so much with mySQL although that is important, you don't want to venture to a new version of WP or mySQL and have issues with your specific site. For that, I would refer to the original developer to verify if any possible issues could come about.

Also depending upon the host, there should be other security measurements in place. This of course does vary from web host to web host. If there is anything that I could help with specifically, please PM me as I rarely check back on posted topics.

    All the best!
