BackOrder Useless?

My understanding is that backorder domains are basically when someone else has a domain you pay $20 to backorder it, and if the guy drops it and doesn't renew it it your register will buy it right away on your behalf.

But isn't this useless? I mean you can register yourself when you see it expire since you can see when it expires at whois.net right???

And I have heard stories where some domain register companies will buy the domains for themselves if they are premium domains.

Anyways hoping to get someone with some expierence in here and maybe he or she can answer this for me.

Which company should I use backorders with? Godaddy?

my advice is not to use Godaddy, because Godaddy has not guarantee that you will get the domain but it will take 18 bucks from you. and if other catch companies are after that domain chances that Godaddy will get it are really low.
I would suggest Snap, backorder is expensive there, (60 bucks) but you dont pay a penny if you dont get the domain. And generally Snap is most probable to catch the domain among all backorder companies.
disclosure: i am talking about my own experience. not having read this from somewhere

Thanks guys, but what do you guys think about just waiting for it to expire and registering it for yourself vs backorder. I don't mind paying some money but just wondering what's the difference really.

It's highly unlikely you will succeed in snagging the domain yourself. Best thing to do is slap down some cash. Which company to use depends on the domain. My personal experience is that Godaddy can snag a domain on backorder - they've done it for me. Personally, I'm wary of using some of the other domain snagging services available as I've come across stories of the domains getting snagged by the company for a 'third party' (i.e. a subsidiary) then sold.

Then you have companies like Snap where the domain gets snagged then auctioned to the highest bidder.

unless the domain is not popular at all, and wouldn't be sought after. example:

asdasdasdasd.com is regged, and you want to reg it?

let it drop then you reg it
