I used Godaddy to backorder 5 domains and unfortunately I was unable to acquire any of them. I was wondering how often will a backorder be successful and will I be able to get a good name this way?

Godaddy backorder sucks, they not even succeed to acquire their own domains.I strongly recommand Pool or Snapnames if you want to backorder.
Backordering a domain is like a lottery, but thru pool i have got some pretty nice names without auctions.

Any venture is practically like a lottery, if you think about it. You win some, you
    lose some.

What did Go Daddy say was the reason you weren't able to acquire any of the 5,

They didn't give me a reason. They just said they don't guarantee anything. They were all good 3 letter .net domains so I imagine the competition was fierce.

But if it's a like a lottery, I should be able to win some if I keep playing.

You can back-order any domain through GoDaddy - you can even backorder cnn.com and DigitalPoint.com. If the owner renews then you never have a chance. They didn't expire and were never available to buy.

Stick to SnapNames/Pool for decent domains.

godaddy used to clean up on .us, haven't chased in some months so not sure if that is still the case. For com/net/org well... they were never any good.
