yes you are right. But it will not help for ranking unless the blog is relevant to ur site. As relevancy in both blogs matters very much for backlinks.

Yes it would be. Most dofollow commenting isn't worthwhile though as pages fall off the front page often, and only posts linked to it generally have good PR. There's tons of exceptions - but you have to look for them, or see sticky/sitewide links on the blog.

Your basic concept is correct if every link to the comment "link" is a dofollow. But there are many ways to block the pages' indexing. I just add a comment and wait to see if it shows up in my site's WMT. If it does, I continue to use it. If not, I move on.
hi this method does help in building backlinks but only when applied with correct sense firstly the blog where you have posted should be of the niche of the website secondly the comment which you have posted on the blog should be relevant and should not be just a 1-2 line general post saying thanks,nice work etc. thirdly try to aim at those blogs which themselves have some good PR and have regular visitors to them so that it can benefit you too thanks, ankur

You're absolutely right. A comment in a dofollow blog is counted as a quality one-way/backlink. The problem is, finding dofollow blogs is difficult these days.
Yes. blog comments on dofollow blogs are counted as backlinks. But don't go overboard in finding posts with PR. dofollow search engines and blog lists are a good source to get backlinks. Many are out of date so check that they are still dofollow!
Yes comment is beneficial for your site but make sure your comment must be do follow attribute and comment should be relevant from the post
