are backlinks to site.com/index the same as site.com, or site.com/blog or whatever? most of my backlinks are going to site.com, but some are to site.com/index. just wondering if I should asked for those /index ones to be changed

    thanks

Homepage is optimized for the primary keywords and the subpages target lesser important keywords. If you want the subpages to rank well for there targeted terms, then get links to them.

Yes just as the person has said above..
So you want the anchor text of the backlinks to your main homepage to be of your main primary keywords, which is what your site is about. Then you want more specfic anchor text to deeper pages within your site, so you want to backlink to various pages all around your site not just your homepage.

WhatsTheRent: No, they aren't. The search engines see "site.com/index" and "site.com" as different pages. Likewise with "www.site.com" and just plain "site.com".

You can combine those three "different pages" by using a 301 redirect in your .htaccess file.

I always wanted to know the answer to this question as I was not sure whether
site.com and site.com/index are viewed as the same page by the search engines.
Now I know that they are viewed differently.
