Alright complete noob here and not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I thought it was at least close...

Could someone explain to me what a backlink is and the best way to go about using/setting them up?

Also Ping... What is ping? I know there are sites you can give your domain to after updating your site... but Im not quite sure what ping is and what its used for.

    Thanks!!!

I'll answer the second part. A ping is a message that is sent. Think if a ping as a tap on the shoulder. You are telling the search engines, "hey, my site is updated. Crawl it."

go to http://pingomatic.com/ after you update your blog or site. Submit it and this site will ping all the major search engines to crawl your site. Sometimes, your site may automatically ping after every blog post. The first question has already been covered. Just do a search or wait for someone to reply :)

think of my link in the previous post as a backlink to pingomatic. Backinks are incoming links to a webpage from another page. The more backlinks a page has, the more popular it is. Quality is a factor. A backlink from the front page of Google is more valuable that 1000 backlinks from no name blogs.

here is another example of a backlink. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlink

Thanks for your reply... so in essence, a backlink is just a link back to your site from another outside site... the more 'backlinks' the higher your page is ranked on google or other search engines because they figure...hey... if lots of people are talking about this place, it must be important..?

Yep , Google will see your site as more of an 'authority' for what ever the keyword is that is being searched . The next step is to start building them :)

I just know if you own an blog, then you can ping to some search engines, then it could make them crawling your site quickly, but if you need backlinks?I think you should use other ways.

So let's say my keyword is massage. I should include the word massage as many times as possible on the site. And then try to get linked or backlinked on as many other sites as possible? Do these backlinks need to be on a different site or can there be more than one on a given site?

Would you have to mention it in the actual comment post or say in a signature of your post? I wouldn't want to just hijack someones blog. And you would be talking about including your www not say a keyword. Cause that would count towards their site not mine right?

what i mean to comment is make assessment to blog/site that allow to comment on it, it will good if the site give you dofollow link, because it can make your position on search engine google up or even you can get PR (Page rangking by google)...

you should update the content, what i mean is give one way link to your website in blogroll/side wide or per page or even in the post.

It is also good to try to get backlinks form blogs and sites that don't tag links as "no follow". This is supposed to tell search engine spiders not to count the link. SOme people are saying that Google has been ignoring the "no follow" tags, but nobody knows for sure.

Search for "do follow blogs" in your subject area and see what you can find to add a link to.

submit your site to the directories and you'll get backlinks. backlinks are incoming links directed to your site.

I'm not sure link exchange is such a good idea. What you need are one-way links to your site. Search this forum, you will find a plethora of resources of where to get backlinks to your site.

The more various backlinks from different sources, the better. ONe link from a video site, one from web 2.0 site, one from a blog comment, one from article submission, other from social boomarking site... you get the idea
