I need to know methods to improve the backlinks for a local search site with several locations, categories and businesses. The website also includes the google news and latest twitter commands on the respective business pages.
Please check this site checklocally.com and suggest the possible places to generate backlinks for individual pages.

Find real people in your area that have a web presence and exchange backlinks with them.

poppaippi gives good advice to start with article marketing. However, I don't agree with his idea of trading links; link exchanges can be viewed as a link scheme by google, which can get your site penalized in rankings. They also can make your site look spammy to high-profile webmasters. The webmasters of the best sites select links based on quality and relevance, and do not use link schemes.

I think it's better to simply get to know webmasters of related or relevant sites on a personal level. Talk to them about what you want to do with the site, how it relates to theirs, etc. This may give you some feedback about how to develop a unique niche for your site so that you're fulfilling a unique need, rather than just competing with existing sites (which is going to make your job harder, not to mention that these people won't want to link to you).

BTW, I checked out your site, and it is not finished. Finish your site before you start promoting it. Coming here and posting on this forum is promoting your site, because we are going to read the forum thread and we are going to check it out. If your site is unfinished (I read lorem ipsum on it, haha), it looks unprofessional. Any effort you spend promoting your site before it's finished is a waste of effort because people will see it and it won't be done, and they'll just leave or lose interest.
