Does it benefit me to have a hyperlink to my website if I place them to my signature at this forum? Please advise!

There is always talk about signature links being devalued. I see no evidence of this.

There are two negatives regarding signature links. If you remove them you may see your SERPs drop (I definately have seen this happen. If you have a sufficient number of backlinks from other sources drop may not be significant.) Seondly the wrong type of webmasters troll these types of forums to find high ranking pages to scrape, hijack, or spam.

I think my blog got most of it's (unimportant ;)) PR4 due to backlinks from this very forum. I did very little promotion and it went to a PR4 about 3 months after launch.

Smyrl right in the fact that there are a fair few unscrupulous (spelling?) webwankers that scrape, spam and copy off others.

    What does "scrape" mean?

scrape, automatically copy content by means of a script that "scrapes" the content of your page (well that's my understanding off it but I've never looked it up)

You need to monitor your SERPs for sites cloaking to your site and use copyscape to find sites who have scraped your content.

    Kasparoff,

FWIW and IMHO only, I'd establish the sites theme with relevant linking first (if the site is new). I suspect my oldest site (2000) gets a bit of a hike on new pages and what not because it's theme is already firmly established.

Either way I don't think sig links will hurt you and people who are interested in your sector will investigate your site and it can lead to business.

Sorry for the double post. You popped than in there Smyrl while I was writing to Kasparoff. Excuse my ignorance but could you explain how to tell when sites are cloaking to my site?

My experience has been the following. If I do a search for one of my keyword phrases and find a listing with my page title, my description, and someone elses URL chances are they are cloaking. Click on the URL given and see if you see any reason for your information to be showing in light of what you see.

    Okay thanks.

I have found a site like that in the past but I called it copying :)

Funnily enough the guy had asked me to advertise his property on my site and when I went to take a look at his site I found a section that was word for word my own stuff down to title, metas, photos and text.

Sorry for the hijack Kaspar - back to business.

I would call that copying as well. If someone is cloaking your site when you go in you won't see your page or information. It is only the search engines that are shown your content.,

Hmmm, I just noticed Kasparoff being in the red, maybe the question about signature links is unnecessary here. btw there is a thread on seo chat that he's started about the same thing :)

don't know about sig links, but i was amused to see that the email address i registered with at this digital point forum is now listed in google... despite the fact that i requested no email from anyone out here, lol.

i think that i'm gonna turn it into my website url, instead of email... i can always use the link back :)
