I think the anchor text use in forums sig can help to improved SERP and it can also be a source of traffic. But when it comes to improving PR I think forums links does not pass PR juice.

Just make sure you are providing something to the forum instead of just using it to put your signature there. Some niche forums can be pretty nasty especially if they know you are there just to drop your link.

Posting in a forum is a 3-run Homer....you get backlinks, traffic, and you get to read lots of useful information on a variety of topics. It doesn't get any better than that.

ya Sticky Threads have PR sometimes.
The sticky thread in this sub-forum has a PR4.
So whoever made a post on that first page. Got a good deal I would say.

So what happens when you change the links in your sig?

Your new sig is applied retrospectively to all your posts, so will the SEs gradually catch up with the 'new' links???

    Did that make sense?

I think it depends if the SEs crawl the topics you have posted on again.

This was a great post - as a relatively new SEO myself I was wondering the same thing. Within a few days after posting here and a number of other sites my BL's went from 0 to about 100+ and my rank in Google SERP went from #12 to #7 within a couple of weeks. Not bad for almost solely using sigs. (I've done a bunch of directory submissions but the vast majority havn't shown up yet =(.

Anyways, there is a real-world example of the benefits of Sig's. MY next question is: Where do you think the plateu in effectiveness is in terms of PR gain? Traffic will continue with more, quality sigs. But I wonder if Google will stop giving a boost in PR when it sees 200 more backlinks from the same forum. I HAVE to imagine they would.

    Not for a while...

You'll need to get to 50 posts to even get a sig link. Then you'll need to turn signatures on (even if it's only a dash) so that all of your posts will have them (after that 50 mark). You'll need to keep in mind as well, that the first 50 will NEVER have a sig.

I sold my sig for $19 last month, so they do serve a purpose ;) Though again, use your signature wisely. Post things that are helpful and informative. Be kind and courteous, and when and where possible squeeze off the link in a post.

And for those buying peoples sigs, don't just look at post count and theid daily average...look for quality. A poster that is just spewing a bunch of oneliners is likely not going to be giving nearly the quality of someone with half the numbers but posting top notch material.
