backlinks help whole site?

    i know this is a very very newbie question but i've become a little confused by the things i've read and need some confirmation.

    does a backlink to www.xyz.com help the search engine ranking of www.xyz.com/abc.html ? or does a link only help the page which it is linked to?

    IMO it will help but not as much as a link directly to the page.

    Backlinks help the linked page directly and the site as a whole in a lesser way indirectly. The anchor text of the link will help the linked page rank for those terms, and there will be a PR benefit (whatever that's worth) for the linked page and therefore any page linked to from that page.
