Backlinks harmful?

    hi guys,

after adding about 20 pr 0-4 links all with the same anchor text my landing page went from position 8 to 6 after a couple of days. thing is, now (one week later) the page is no longer in the index (though my home page now ranks 18 for the same keyword).
im guessing google noticed all the links had the same text and has punished me, anyone else had this before? do you think the page will float up later?

also, i hear google doesn't like landing pages which are basically commision junction ads. so I'm thinking of either using either embedding the ad image with javascript, or linking to a php script with something like go.php?url=qksrv.net/xxx
any ideas on what would be better?

    cheers
    chris

How old is the domain? We would need more info.

I'd say it's not very likely that you'd be punished, unless your backlinks were from a linkfarm, etc. Even then, I would doubt your domain would be "punished" but instead the juice from such places would simply be discounted.

As to your next concern, I would not make a landing page with just a bunch of ads on it. If you want Google to not follow your Commision Junction ads, then javascript would be a good route.

    thanks for your reply

the domain is just over a year old, page rank 4 with real links

the landing page is targetted to a particular piece of software, its basically my review of the software with a banner ad for a free trial.
    (http://www.unregisterednews.com/download callwave.htm)

the links are from reciprocal link pages (so not very high quality i guess), though my page with the return links hasn't been indexed yet

    cheers

If you are trading links with lower pr sites, you will have pr drain. Try to focus on quality one way links instead of reciprocal links. Your results will be much better.

Also rel="nofollow" all your CJ ads. No need passing them link juice.

Absolutely not. This won't hurt your PR. Low PR backlinks still help (just not as much as higher PR ones). Google will never penalize you for backlinks. If this was the case, I could send tons and tons of backlinks from low PR sites to my competitor's site, and ruin their PR/SERP. That would never happen.

This line is much more accurate.

More IBLs through one way links than reciprocal linking. You can also linkexchange especially to related links...There's no harm in linkexchange but only don't do it excessively.

Your page is just doing a google dance. Not only sites, but pages can dance in the rankings. It will come back, you did nothing wrong. And you can verify that by looking at how your home page is ranking well.

Give it a week to a month, and the page will show up again. Make sure you link to the landing page from other pages in your site, or get more incoming links, and I'm sure you'll get back even sooner.
