    Register your site in Google Webmaster Tools.
    There you can find all the incoming external and internal links.

    if you are looking for backlinks from the big G, you may want to look at Angela's packet. A few months back she showed how you could get backlinks from Google.

    Ring up google and ask them to put your link on their homepage. They will give you a footer link.
    Just tell them where you want the link to go. Example in the footer links between "Advertising Programs" and "Business Solutions" or next to "about google".

    Well, If you want to have backlinks build links to your site and if you want to know the number of your backlinks use tools like backlinkwatch, link diagnosis or yahoo.com.

    It would be better to send them an email which explains the benefits of links trading and how much trading links with his/her site will help Google's ranking and traffic :)

    At first you should make a query:
    link:yoursite.com -site:yoursite.com
    Then you won't see links from your own site.

    And even this may be the wrong way because you'll see only the best links. If you need all links go to Google Webmaster Tools.
    If you don't want to register in Google Webmaster Tools, verify your site then go to Yahoo links
    http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=yoursite.com&bwm=i&bwmo=d&bwmf=s
    But notice that it shows rel="nofollow" links that doesn't count for Google.

    You can do link building. Do directory submission, article submission, blog creation, forum participation and so on.
