Each forum discussion page has 50+ outgoing links (member sigs, in-post links, recent post feed etc.). I don't think there is much 'juice' in those links. However, it's very easy to get 20+ laser targeted UV per day from relevant forum.

At least for this forum, you won't benefit that much, but just think of it as a backlink that would otherwise go to waste. If you're here to build backlinks to your sites, you're here for the wrong reason. If you are here to learn about all the things people post on digital point, it's a worthwhile positive backlink to your sites.

I don't get why but even though I post a link in my sig when I check with backlinkwatch it doesn't show any backlink from dp. Is there a reason for this, am I suppose to link it in a certain way?

Signature links are great source for backlinks. Try searching "1 way forum links' and see TOP sites use forum signature as main method of getting SERP.

I don't think it does a lot for SEO/Page Rank, but I definitely get targeted traffic from forum signatures. I am a member of dozens of forums that allow sigs and get 15-20 uniques per day just from that. It can't hurt to sign up for forums and put a sig in. Just don't be spammy and contribute a little to the forum

My niche is not seo, article spinning or other linking related business- thus my traffic from here is 0+0=0
Backlinks- Due to the sheer number of posts on a daily basis, weekly, monthly I am reasonably certain that the search engines give little, little value to the links form forum signatures of all of us. I did not say zero. I would think that some of the links that attract me also attract others- check out the whole article on my seo blog/site for more information on how to gain 1 billion back links in a day worked on me the first hour I read the posts. Now, only once in a blue moon. What is a blue moon anyway?

Personally I am here trying to suck the brains of those of us who know "something" about linking, seo and various issues that pertain to my site. Keep in mind I sell sexy crotchless panties so how smart could I be?

Can you back up your arguments for either of these statements?

    Here's 5 things to consider...
    1) Most forums tend to run as dofollow. This means that the search engines find the pages and then count any such links that are located within your signature field. The fact that they are dofollow tells me that the bots take notice.

    2) The advantage here is that you can add sufficient anchor text, which is how we manage to rank well for specific keywords/ key phrases.

    3) If the forum in question is relevant to the site you are promoting then these links will hold some value. I run an adult blog that pretty much relies on forum signatures across a number of popular adult forums and I have received decent rankings and have been crawled more all due down to them. Still think they hold no value? How else have I been ranking high then?

    4) Through testing the field, some of my rankings have took a big nosedive when links have been removed from a number of forums. They either didn't like the self-promotion (non webmaster forums don't), or they decided to run as nofollow. Either way, when the links were found I received a boost and that boost went down when the links disappeared.

    5) A backlink is a backlink. Why should commenting on blogs where the inner page have zero PR have any more benefit than a link on a relevant forum? Forum backlinks might not be the strongest links to gain, but they certainly do help.
