I dont really get this at all , It really sounds very stupid and according to me should be not be a key to SEO . Getting lots of backlinks from directories seems very much funny as i cannot see any logic into this .

Getting backlinks from related sites is good but from directories is a bit funny .

The backlinks from directories are still useful i feel and if people place them in a relevant category with similar sites its still of some benefit.

IMO, backlinks from directories have very limited value. Very few directories still serve their original purpose of categorizing useful lists of websites for users. Most of the directories now are for SEO only, and engineers at Google are well aware of this.
Perhaps MSN or other less important SE still consider directory backlinks, but this strategy will become obsolete very soon.

Very true. The only real value i see in directories is getting a new site indexed. My new sites are indexed within 4 days on average.

It's not THE key to seo, just part of it. Isn't a backlink a backlink, whether it comes from a directory or not? Of course the page the link is on should be related. Is Google's algo really powerful enough to work out whether the link is on a directory or not?
Backlinks from relevant pages with high PR does help.
If backlinks from directories can be identified, and this element of SEO becomes obsolete, what does everyone think will be the next strategy?

An extra link pointing to your site is an extra link, and considering you can submit your site to a lot of directories for free - why not go for it?

If google saw directories as worthless SEO tools, they wouldn't get SE placement, they wouldn't get PR, etc. etc.

At the very least, it couldn't hurt.

At the most, they do pass some sort of importance, they do put your link out there one more time, and it does help get your site indexed.

I also know that while the effect in G may be limited, MSN responds very well to this type of marketing, and can drive a fair amount of traffic to your site as well.

There are many ways to wisely use such links. For instance you can build a separate page, write an article using your site's keyword and submit it in several directories. After getting some page rank onto that page you just link to your main site and thus get a good link. Works good if that page is hosted on another domain.

There's nothing funny about directories and they DO work, when you wisely choose and use them. Moreover, they aren't helping "a bit", but can become decisive for good position in SERPs, again, if you WISELY use them.

what you are looking at is what seo has turned out to be, but in reality it makes a lot of sense that the more sites out there link to you with a certain keyword, the higher you should rank for it, it´s like a recommendation from other sites.

I am pretty sure that directory backlinks have been devalued by google, they do still mean something and a lot of them are free so I still do it.

And a link is a link, just check out the first result in google for the terms "miserable failure" and "liar"
