When you create backlinks for an online retail store, should it be for the main site address or should I be creating backlinks for every product page?

You should not only get backlinks to your front page but also get deep links to your product pages - that sounds more natural for Google and the other search engines.

backlinks should be spread over between the front page and inner pages to make the link building campaign look natural. you build the most amount of links to your homepage, say around 60% or so and spread 40% links across inner pages which would be a good linking strategy

Deep linking is always better than linking only your homepage...

One should try to get more links to deep pages than the homepage only. This will improve your rankings substantially.

For you its required to have the back links for the home page only. When the inner pages of the site links for separate works, then we need to get the back links for the inner pages also.As you are a On line retail store, the back links for the home page is sufficient. The home page get the link for the products and all other pages for the site. You can also add a site map for your site.

To every page man. We want Google to be indexing every single page and not just the main page. Here's why. Let's say you sell boots. And if someone wants to buy blue boots. If someone keys in blue boots and finds your exact product page (blue boots), they're more likely to buy them than if they get taken into your main page where they have to search for blue boots.

Just my two cents though. =)

Having backlinks to your inner pages has extra weight, but backlinking to home page is good,as you may change your site pages sometime,so links would be dead in that case

IMO it's depend on your site structure, is it a micro niche site which has only less than 5 pages? Or is it a 300+ pages online store website? On the first one it's recommended to get it only to the homepage as your biggest weapon is your main page, the other pages is just there to support your main page. But if it is the second one (300+ pages online store) it is very advisable to get different backlinks for each product pages with different keyword/anchor text for each pages.
