backlinks double in one week

I use iwebtool to check how many sites linking to my site. Last week it was about 400+ backlinks, yesterday show 1000+ and today 1200+. I didn't even do anything, just submitting to a few directories. I also notice a huge drop in my google rankings from page 1 to page 8. What could be happening? Please help!

Quality counts more than quantity for Google. Assuming that big G did not screw up (sometimes it happens), it is possible that some of the directories to which you had submitted your site are known link farms. It is also possible that other sites in your category (key words) have improved much more than you have, kicking you site back to page 8. Just a thought.

I have a similar situation - I've done a bit of link exchanging, iwebtools says I went up 300 :)

How accurate is iwebtool on backlinks? Because on PR prediction it shows a completely different number than their backlink tool shows.

It could be because of a change you made earlier, completely unrelated to you submitting it to directories - what other changes have you made to the website in the past few weeks?

Even if you submit to link farms nothing would happen unless you point links to them. Think of this-Your enemies could just submit your url to link farms and get you out of business. Big Bro G is aware of this and so no problem. Check the links you are pointing to atleast once every three days and run checks on them to see if they are banned. If you suspect anything wrong remove the links immediately. This will help you not get banned yourself.

What do you use to check the links you're pointing to in an easy way?

I go up and down a hundred a day through MSN and Yahoo, no idea why, but I'm not too worried. I think the longer the site is around, the "stronger" the backlinks will become.

Nice reference. Don't know why I haven't come across these before. Thanks for the tip.
