I’m not sure if I can rank for this keyword I found. There is this keyword that is on a domain that has like thousands of backlinks to that domain but has only around 50 backlinks to that article that has that keyword I’m targeting. Does this mean that I also have to have a website with more backlinks to the main domain and just over 50 backlinks to my page with the article for me to rank higher? Or could I just feed my keyword targeted article with over 50 backlinks and I’ll be on top. I’m assuming I have to have a powerful site for me to rank for that keyword…lol but I don’t know.
I'm pretty sure you only have to have more backlinks than the specific page that has the same keyword.
It depends on the quality of those 50 BL the other site has, how long the site has been around, if it is optimized for that particular keyword. You could have only 10 BL to your article, but if those BL come from reputable sites that are relevant to your niche, and you do your on-page optimization , you can outrank him easily.
Try aiming for backlinks that are relevant to your niche and with a much higher PR. Then, you won't need to worry about the number of backlinks. Good luck.
focus on gathering quality backlinks that is related to your site or blogs that will help your rankings
