Some are going to come in here and say that a backlink is a backlink. I tend to lean toward the opposite side. Whenever I put a comment out there I like to have it put on a relevant blog. This way at least the reader is actually interested in what I am saying. Sure you might still get a backlink but how many readers interested in DJ services are going to read about hosting?

ahh true, i would normally go for a relevant blog, hence why i posted it, but if someone goes to sign up for hosting and their interested in music, a DJ could be their thing, so i suppose i can help :)

While a link is still a link, it really depends on what you want to achieve. Some people do link building only with pr in mind. Personally, I am more interested on getting additional traffic and whatever link juice I get from the links are just a bonus. But either way, whether for pr or for traffic, I believe a few quality links is much better than a lot of less quality ones. Cause honestly, even when our links are placed on sites that are relevant, the chances of getting clicks are not always that high. So, having it placed on a really different niche such as hosting.. the chances are even lower or worse, no clicks at all. But, I don't think there's a big negative effect to it if you end up saying yes to the offer.

Angryeve is right there will be no negative effect. But, your chance of driving traffic is greater if you place links on sites or blogs that people are interested in. Im not quite sure what your after here. What is the purpose of wanting this link? Are you trying to get juice or traffic? That will help determine what will benefit you more.

hehe.. well, I'm not really an seo expert. But from what I know, it won't do much since Google is really getting smarter everyday.lol. But since you're after increasing pr, then you might want to try looking at directory sites and target blogs. Not all people have time to invest on making blog comments but at this point its still very effective especially when you leave an interesting comment or at least something meaningful. And if you are willing to spend some cash, you can just go hire some freelancers at freelance sites. I see a lot of people ask for that kind of job there. But I think its an even better option, since you could give directions to only target relevant blogs or/and dofollow blogs where you'll get more link loving juice. =)

Relevant links are much better, as others have written. Think about it from Google's perspective.

Let's take this as an example. I run a blog on movie reviews. I reference a great car place nearby and restaurant. The restaurant is still voted on my behalf (the website). Therefore it should be counted by a SE. After all people are people, and talk and link about various things...can't always pigeon hole things according to niche.

The more closely related the contextual content of the site linking the better.

It's always better to have relevant backlinks. Nevertheless i dont think google would puniche you having non-relevant backlinks to your site

If you're trying to increase PR, just try to find higher PR sites to link from, and push out daily content. There's a lot more to PR than just inbound links. The fact that you are asking this question proves that you should probably make an SEO plan before going to grab a bunch of links from misc places.
