Backlinking Guidance

I am a relative newbie and need some additional guidance on several points.

    1) my site has 30 + pages, each dedicated to a specific category of items (e.g. men's clothes on a page, women's on another). When I am getting backlinks do I want them to my site generally (i.e. the home page) or to a specific page on my site? Does it matter and, if so, how?

    2) If I regularly post in the same forum, but on different threads, do each of those posts count as a backlink?

    Brent,

You want deep links (links to pages other than your home page) and home page links.

Work to get links using anchor text that are the keyphrases that each page is targeting. Vary the anchor text as you go and keep the link profile "natural".

Get home page links that brand your site (the domain name / company name) using directories.

Use forums and blog posts to deep link using anchor text that you know have search engine demand by looking at Google's Adwords tool and free Wordtracker among others.

The ideal scenario is a link from a related site, on their page that is most related to your anchor text / content, that has a recent cache date with Google (which means your link will get indexed quickly).

    Are your links junk?

It's best to get links to all pages of your site with your keywords.

Posting in forums mainly helps get your sites in you sig get crawled more frequently.

Forums posts are one of the many ways of getting backlinks.
There are other ways as well. To mention a few:
    - Blog commenting
    - Classified ads posting
    - Directory submission (free mainly I will suggest)
    - Offer a free tool hosted from your site

But getting a back link from forum is not useful. If you are posting a disscussion with specific keyword that are spamming.

Putting links with keywords will get you banned from forums. Some forums even don't allow any external links.

    To get more backlinks:
    - add your site url to search engines and directories like DMOZ.
    - participate in forums with your site url in the signature.
    - exchange your link with other web sites that have high page rank.
    - publish your own articles with your site url in it to ezine sites.
    - comment in high page rank blogs

and more techniques you can find in my blog in the signature.

Okay, this is what you need to know. Ideally, you would want to rank your homepage for the more competitive keywords with more searches per month. You would rank your sub-pages for less competitive terms and long tail keywords. So, in essence, you want to get back links to both your home page and sub-pages but, in most cases, for different keywords. Remember, that if you get your sub-pages and product pages ranked for more specific searches like "mens jeans size 32" you will get higher conversion from this term. In other words, the shopper already knows exactly what they want to BUY and they are not just BROWSING around the net for fun.

In short, the goal of your home page is to bring you lots of targeted traffic, but the goal of your sub-pages should be to get traffic from more obscure terms that will convert better in terms of sales. I would also recommend that you focus on unique, quality content for your product pages so that you can get these high converting customers i mentioned earlier. If you want more information on ranking for "long tail keywords" visit my post:

Yes and no. Google counts a backlink as one "vote" for your website, almost as if someone is raising there hand to vote for your website. However, if you get two links from the same site, its like that same person raising both hands to vote for your website. In other words, your still only getting one vote but it is a slightly stronger vote (if that makes any sense). In most instances, it would be better to have one link each from two separate websites than to have two links from the same one.
