I have been looking over this in some depth and the general feeling is "dont do it, its not worth anything" but then i stumbled on this rather old post from matt cutts: Being old, is this still true?
With virtual hosting, do you mean shared hosting (like 500 people sharing same IP) or VPS hosting (you have a virtual server, with dedicated IP). Because I don't think they will punish websites on VPS, dunno about shared hosting though.
Then it might affect it, but only a little. Not sure though. I think it is not a very important factor, you could always add like $1 monthly to hosting for a dedicated ip
thanks. yeah $1 is fine, but i was purely curious due to that amount of people shouting "no backlinks from sites with same ip"
Well, it does benefit a little for seo to have backlinks from multiple IP's. Try google "SEO webhosting", you can get packaged with several ip's, so you can build good backlinks. But in my opinion, not worth it if you site is not already ranking well
