I understand that relevant backlinks are important, however how exactly does Google determine relevancy? I have just launched a Tupac Shakur fan site. I think I have a benefit from my competition, due to the fact I strongly doubt many of the other webmasters will have much knowledge and experience with Search Engine Optimization. But I'm having a problem obtaining backlinks. I've emailed several webmasters of other Tupac Shakur fan sites, requesting a link exchange but have only heard from one of them. I have also submitted the site to several general/music directories. I am wondering though, will Google relate the recording artist Tupac Shakur with music? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
hi, the relevancy is a complex factor and depends on many things; one of them is the keyword density from the page where your link will be placed, also the text near your link is very important - so make sure you have relevant text before and after the link. make sure you don't use a link like: Visit my page by clicking here! , better make it like a sentance with your keyword/keyword phrase as anchor text be the first who adds the exchange link, then contact the webmaster of the partner site and notice that you've added a reciprocal link (not vice-versa) good luck
relevant is always better, some time you can get penalized for having bad quality links. Search engines now a days know how we build links so any bad link would harm for sure.
i'm not sure it will harm, anyway i doubt it if google penalized site A because on another "bad" site B there is a link to site A would not be fair.. this way "enemies" could ruin your site the only bad thing which can happen if your link is not good is a low importance of the link
Hmm well that's bad news I guess, considering I could only find five or six sites related to the artist Tupac Shakur which offer link exchange... Anywaay, thanks a lot. I guess I will just continue collecting general backlinks.
I think general music sites and directories will give you a relevant link. Try and get keyword links in music blog postings and articles that might be more relevant. Many blogs offer permanent keyword links for $5-$10 each, so if you were willing to spend a little money you could buy some relevant ones.
Even if you don't find many relevant sites, just try and link to sites which are somewhat related to your site like music related sites or other artists fan sites. What you don't want to do is link to sites which are totally irrelevant to your sites theme and content.
But you see, that was the main point in the thread - Will Google be able to tell any difference in the Relevancy between a site completely about music (which does not contain the keyword Tupac at all on the page), and a site about Web Hosting, or Health? I don't expect Google to be advanced enough to be able to categorize Tupac Shakur under Music. So really, getting backlinks from sites about web hosting, is no better than a site about music, right?
well, your site can't about Tupac Shakur and not contain music related keywords like: song, songs, music, album, fan, fans, manager, artist, rap, hip hop, etc etc... then other music related sites should be relevant to yours if google can't find a relevance between Tupac Shakur and Shakira, that's another story
Google's algo is ofcourse smart enough to credit you for getting a BL from music source. Tupac was a musical figure so you bet you will have credited BL. Google however maynot show all the BLs like MSN does so don't assume that those BLs are waste. Use a keyword and see how your SERP responds based on your BL (quantity). If your SERP improves, meaning quality and quantity both are good, if your SERP goes South, meaning just quantity is not good enough - your BLs are not being credited. All this should take 1-3 months from the day you get BLs so start getting BLs and start monitoring.
