Thats a good question - could I add and ask on behalf of forum topics? If the topics have reletively good PR does that carry over to your site too??

    Cheers

Firstly if you want to be ethical only post a blog comment or thread reply if you have something meaningful to say, don't just do it for the link, if you have a blog you know what it's like to get spam comments.

With regards to PR transfer and SERPs, forum links can help but bear in mind how many links a typical thread has, any PR gain would be severely diluted. You'll also find with blogs most use the no follow tag, so in theory search engines don't even follow them.

View the source code and see if there's a rel=nofollow on the <a> tag.

but i noticed two things here..

    1. rel='external nofollow'
    2 rel="nofollow"

what is the difference in the two if any?

Absolutely! Very frustrating to see several spam comments in my guest book everyday. Most the comments are meaningless and are only for the sake of backlink . I always delete such comments immediately ;)
