Isn't backlinking is hyped specially when it comes to ecommerce. I see so many sites with no backlinks, yet ranking really high in SE. Am i missing something, how important is it to gain quality links, does it really do anything to build traffic. Look at vitacost.com with almost half million uniques and i don't see any backlinks. what am i missing....
If you are connected to related sites, it can drive some important traffic to your site. Most back linking discussed on here is more for PR building. This is often done to sell links. However, link building is also important for sites to build traffic. Advertising your site on a related site can drive tons of traffic. Of course for those types of links, it does not matter if they are follow or no follow because the main point is to get traffic. Where did you get that vita-cost has no back links?
backlinking is very important. one of the ranking criteria google uses is the number of vote (backlinks in this case) a site gets. noe google is very picky about which backlink it will give you credit for, but it is impossible to get ranked high in competitive seach term unless if you have quality backlinks. and about what you said regadring seeing site ranked high without any backlinks, it is possible that their backlinks didn't get updated. but sure they have backlinks. google doesn;t display all the backlinks and sometimes it takes time for them to show.

i guess i am checking it wrong, i have been using iwebtool backlink checker. Is there a way i can research my competitor pages, to see why are they ranking so high, any tips on what to look for? so far the only information i can see using tool is the keywords. What else can i extract and learn.
