hi, May I know will a backlink from DP be effective for a gaming site? Will it be a irrelevant backlink, since DP is a internet marketing forum. thanks
I guess it depends on the thread, but I can imagine it be classed as irrelevant. You are much better off going for gaming sites, and I have found banner in sigs work better than text, as you get higher clickthrough rates. Nevertheless, I still have my gaming site in the footer links
Forum links don't pass much juice anyway You need to have a good 'copy' to get traffic from forum links
It'll be irrelevant and you won't be able to get much of the link love as each page has a number of outgoing links. However, you can drop your link expecting a better craw rate for your site as DP is frequently indexed, crawled by SEs.
but I heard irrelevant backlinks will hurt your pagerank?? but I don't believe it, because sometime maybe your visitors will link to your site from their blogs, and their blogs might be irrelevant to yours. And i think google will take this situation in consideration. am I right?
@Kontent: Any proofs? Do you have any sites that are ranking well for competitive words by using only forum links? @iBall: I agree with you. I think irrelevant links won't hurt (unless big G can spot a pattern of buying links).. but relevant links are better
Yes - it probably will not be valued that much for the topic specifically. But still the link will help the basic rank of your site - in a wider sense.
Irrelevant links don't hurt your pagerank (a link that passes on pagerank will still get ranked well), but it can affect your SERPS. Suppose if you have a website about football, and you get a link from a (for example) pr9 governmental site about the fire service in Florida. Chances are, because of the weight & authority of the site, you will get ranked fairly highly for things like "florida fire services", but you may not get ranked for football related keywords, as Google will think "the site linking is about florida fire services, as this authoritive site has linked to it, which means that gives the best indication what's it about!". I believe it's better to chase relevance than pagerank. It's not that hard actually, but you have to be cheeky and ask for links However, on forums such as DP, because of teh overall general nature of the site, I no doubt think that your rank won't be affected too much.
