You have to parse the entire Internet to find links pointing to the particular site.

Seriously, I think the sites offering backlinks checking tools just use yahoo, google and other search engines providing backlinks list and merge all those links all together.

 

Most backlink checkers just use the yahoo api, basically they query yahoo, or yahoo sitexplorer for links pointing at a domain/page and parse the results. Some nifty ones do the same with msn and google, but generally if any one is used the most its yahoo because the results are the most accurate.

I've attached some common queries:

http://search.yahoo.com/

Too see all links pointing at a domain, inclusive the sites own links:
linkdomain:digg.com

For edu or gov sites linking at the domain:
linkdomain:digg.com -site:digg.com (site:.edu OR site:.ac.uk OR inurl:k12)
linkdomain:digg.com -site:digg.com (site:.gov OR site:.mil)

To see only external links pointing at the domain:
linkdomain:digg.com -site:digg.com

To see what links to a specific page on a website (externally):
link:http://digg.com/science -site:digg.com

To see what links to a specific page on a website (internally):
link:http://digg.com/science site:digg.com

Edu linking at a specific page:
link:http://digg.com/science -site:digg.com (site:.edu OR site:.ac.uk OR inurl:k12)

Same for gov:
link:http://digg.com/science -site:digg.com (site:.gov OR site:.mil)


Im not going to list all the Google (mostly inferior for backlink checks anyways) and Msn queries, the only other one that might be interesting is checking for reciprocal links with msn:

linkfromdomain:digg.com +linkdomain:reddit.com

I don't know exactly how can you build backlinks checker (check the web...are to many softwares @ ) but if someone is interested I will sell links for $1 each with proof of them and guaranteed with results in 2 months (of course not first position - nobody can guarantee that)
